Say the perimeter of a square is 44 inches.
The formula P = 4s is used.
44 inches = 4s, where s is side of square.
44 inches ÷ 4 = s
11 inches = s
What if the area is 49 inches^2?
A = s^2.
49 = s^2
sqrt{49} = sqrt{s^2}
7 inches = side of square.

You can't unless you measure it with
a ruler; or if you are given some more
information.
Are you given the perimeter of the square?
Are you given the Area of the square?
Are you given information about triangles inside the square?

You find the area of a square by squaring the length of one of its sides.
If you know the area, you can find the length of each side by taking the square root of area.
