Purpose of scaled score?

Hi, what is the purpose of converting a raw score into a scaled score? Thanks

Having done so, I can confidently tell you that it is possible to write an exam on which no student receives a perfect score -- even one for 250 students.  It is also possible to write an exam on which very few actually score 90 percent.  scaling the scores [relative to the mean achieved] corrects for this.  [Lecturers and professors have limited time to write and grade exams -- and almost no time to experiment in determining how hard is too hard.]  -- by contrast, external exams run by major outfits [bar exam?] have the scaling part done in the selection of the questions, rather than after the fact.  such an exam takes a lot longer to write, test and accept.   -- grampa  [luckily for you, I'm retired now]
