A standard Bugatti Veyron* would pass an F1 car in a straight line eventually, but it would have to be a very, very long straight strip...

The power output of current hybrid engines is similar to the Bugatti, and initial acceleration is much the same (0-62 ~2.4 seconds), but that's where the similarities end.

An F1 car weighs in at ~750kg, it will reach 186mph in ~8 seconds and its top speed of ~230mph in around 12 seconds.

The Veyron weighs almost 2000kg, it takes twice as long to reach 186mph than the F1 car, but will eventually outpace it reaching 253mph in about 55 seconds.

So, in a straight drag race both cars will appear level after 2.5 seconds but then the F1 will start to pull ahead.

4 seconds in and the Bugatti is a couple of hundred yards behind and falling back.

At 8 seconds the F1 is travelling at ~180mph almost 2 miles ahead of the Bugatti and still accelerating.

12 seconds and the F1 reaches maximum speed, 230mph, and has covered ~9 miles; the Bugatti is travelling ~150mph and is around 3 miles behind, but still accelerating.

After 55 seconds the Bugatti has reached maximum speed and cut the gap to less than 2 miles. It will take the Bugatti ~4-5 minutes to catch the F1 car with both cars having travelled almost 30 miles.

*I'm using production figures for the original Bugatti Veyron, not the Super Sport or Chiron.

The Bugatti Veyron holds the land speed record for any PRODUCTION  car.

It has a 1000 horsepower engine that would leave an F-1 car in the dust........ but , that's in a straight line drag strip.

F-1 cars are made for handling and taking corners, at high speed....so are superior on such tracks with all the twists and turns.

Straight line yes, round corners no where near, round a circuit no where near. The Bugatti was designed with top speed in mind. F1 cars are designed to be quick round a circuit so a 267mph top speed is little use if they never get too it. However they can take corners incredibly fast. A GT Car, which corners similar to a veyron takes Eau Rouge at spa at 130mph, an f1 car takes it 185mph. Thats the gap you are talking. If F1 designers wanted to design a car with top speed as the priority, they'd go faster...
