Who do you think is a better guitar player, Dave Mustaine or Yngwie Malmsteen?
I'm not a Yngwie Malmsteen fan, but I'm curious what you all think.

People who don't actually play the guitar think that guitarists who can shred must be as good as it's possible to be. The fact is that it's not that hard to do. There are plenty of people out there who can play Yngwie Malmsteen's stuff note for note. Maybe Dave Mustaine would have a hard time with some of Yngwie's licks and runs, but he's no slouch when it comes to leads himself. Dave might not have the same finesse when it comes to soloing, but he can shred too. Malmsteen would never be able to sit down and play Mustaine's rhythm parts though. Ever. Anybody who actually plays guitar and has really taken the time to try and examine what Mustaine does and analyse the man's playing can tell you that he is a complete maniac. Mustaine is a beast. He's in a class all by himself. His contemporaries will readily admit that he's capable of doing things that they don't really fully understand. Malmsteen is just another flash in the pan whiddly diddly "hey everybody, look at me!" sort of player. Listen to a bloke called Joe Stump. He's a complete Malmsteen clone. If the two of them were trading licks back and forth you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. Listen to Dave's rhythms, how tight and complex and intricate and nuanced they are. The picking technique alone is mind boggling, never mind how he manages to palm mute the way he does and get that sort of crunch out of what he's doing. Malmsteen was a shredder by the time he was a teenager, and that's great, but he's got nothing beyond that. His songwriting ability doesn't even begin to compare to Dave Mustaine's. He can lead, but his songs are laughably atrocious. Why? Because nobody cares. They just want to listen to him solo and he just needs a backing track for his bullshit diminished Phyrigian runs. Malmsteen is a one trick pony. Dave Mustaine is one of the most talented and gifted and innovative guitarists of all time. Anybody who doesn't see it that way has obviously never learned how to play the guitar. End of story.

Yngwie for sure. Dave is a great metal guitarist and more skilled than Hetfield, but Yngwie is insane on that thing.
Especially doing long solos.
