Why is the first thing many engineers tell you is that they're an engineer ?

It could be to be recognized for the hard work and intelligence required to get an engineering degree.  For the record, I do not do that.

It may be to establish knowledge of the subject if the subject is electronic.

I have never met an engineer who did that.
