Is being vegetarian cheaper than following a common omnivore diet?
Do vegetarian foods and alternatives cost less than regular meat?

Depends on what you eat. Beans and rice are cheap.
Meat substitutes, fake ice cream, fake butter, fake "eggs" are usually more expensive than the real thing.
Fresh veggies are imported from other countries and can be expensive. But frozen ones are reasonably priced.

Actually, its depend on you there is a tot of vegetarian item which is costly as like the beef. So it's not necessarily like you asked.

Assuming you do all the prep yourself and you don’t buy packaged vegetarian foods like cauliflower pizza, butternut squash sauce, and Marie Calendar lasagna, yes. Fresh produce can be cheaper, especially if you shop at farmers markets with better deals than your typical supermarket. Chicken and pork are some of the cheapest meats out there, but frequently eating steak, shellfish, and sushi can tally up significantly faster. Popular vegetarian sources of protein come from nuts, beans, and cheese, with beans being the cheapest by far. Anyone looking to reduce their grocery bill should go vegetarian, assuming they do the necessary homework of what’s needed to thrive on such a diet

The "common omnivore diet" is 90% vegetarian. The "meat" is only 10% of the diet.
Vegetables are expensive. A head of green leaf lettuce is over $1.50. Bell peppers are generally $1.50 per each. Out of season, corn on the cob is a buck an ear -- piracy!
Meat? Chicken is damn cheap, generally under a buck/pound. Skinless boneless chicken breast is under $2/lb. Pork is nearly as cheap.

It depends on what you eat - a “vegetarian diet” just means you don't eat meat. Some meat is cheaper than some fruit, vegetables, cereals etc .

It depends on one's specific food choices and shopping habits.
Rice and beans are cheap.
Beyond Sausage is three times the price as pork sausage.
Virtually all grocery stores have weekly sales of produce, meat, grains and pantry staples every week. Smart shoppers who cook from scratch and plan meals around what's on sale can spend 50% less whether they are vegetarian or not.
For many of us, a vegetarian and an omnivorous diet really isn't drastically different. I eat meat, but I certainly don't eat it at every meal and snack. Maybe once a day. I eat a lot of the same things a vegetarian could eat...oatmeal, yogurt, salads, vegetable or bean soups, pasta with marinara or pesto, PB&J sandwiches, hummus and pita, bagel and cream cheese...
