Do nurses shake baby powder on newborn babies after they are delivered when they diaper them?

It’s not a good idea to use talcum powder on your baby. It contains ingredients that can irritate your baby’s delicate skin. A soft towel is much better for drying your baby after a bath.

If you're worried about the creases in your baby's skin becoming irritated, make sure you dry them well by patting gently with a towel. You can then use barrier cream or a light, unscented baby oil or lotion to keep their skin smooth and soft. Talc doesn’t protect against nappy rash either. So, use a barrier cream on their bottom instead.

Talc can also be harmful if your baby inhales it. The very fine particles in talc can clog the delicate air sacs in their lungs.

Sadly, a very small number of babies have developed breathing difficulties and died after becoming covered in talc. Bear in mind these cases are extremely rare. The babies who lost their lives had their faces covered in talc, usually after playing with the container.
