What kind of a Quipment do people use to chopping down trees?

They use saws and chainsaws

You can go Paul Bunyon and use an ax. Some even use hand saws. -- Even 2 man saws. All that is pretty much in the past. Now, various size motorized chainsaws are used. Sm al ones with a 10 inch bars for a small homeowner mostly for brush and very small trees. Larger up to about 16 or 18 inch bars for someone who might cut some 10 in to 14 in diameter trees for firewood. Even larger chainsaws and some really weird machines are used by to harvest trees for large operations to use them for lumber.

It depends on where the people are. In places like Brazil, Scott is correct. In places like Oregon and Canada heavy equipment is used.
