Exposure to language, comforting, giving them attention and because it's enjoyable. Babies can't talk but they're listening right from the beginning and the more you talk to them directly the more quickly they'll learn to talk. It's also good because half way through the story they've usually fallen asleep, meaning that the parent can get some peace to relax or sleep too, which is very valuable considering how little sleep most parents with babies get.
