Americans why do you not trust your news outlets?

Here in Sweden, our domestic news outlets are trusted by both parts of the political spectrums.

how come Americans aren't' the same?

Just over a century ago, JP Morgan was suffering from bad press so he found out which newspapers he needed to control to make sure that he was presented in a good light nearly all the time.

His team found identified a set of newspapers that controlled around 90% of the message and Morgan promptly bought them. it has been all down hill ever since.

Later, the CIA realised that they would benefit from controlling the media as well. It did two things for them. Firstly, it allowed them to present themselves in a good light and, secondly, journalists were good covers for spies. That is when the US had Operation Mockingbird in which various CIA operatives were infiltrated into the media in many capacities.

CNN pays out millions in slander suits, often. News is now left leaning opinion.

Americans are the descendants of rebels.  We don't trust authority, we need to be convinced.  Our media outlets have an agenda, only one side of a discussion is presented.  If you ever watched American media, you'd detect it right away.  Besides, you should never automatically trust anyone on anything.  You should research it yourself.  ... "mostly peaceful protest."  ... so idiotic it is actually funny.

Traditionally , newspapers both print the facts -- and express their opinions .

Over the years ,however, these two functions have become conflated ,so that today , many newspapers now approach stories based on the prejudices ---  and  select and manipulate only those facts that support that opinion .

In the 1960s the news outlets were trusted.  Walter Cronkite was very trusted == people even called him Uncle Wally lie he was part of the family.  === In the 1940s and 50s Walter Winchell (radio) was very, very trusted.  Then came crooks in politics == mainly Nixon.  Some people choose to believe him instead of the news,  Same with Reagan and the Iran-Contra affair.  People found it more comforting to accept lies from politicians and not believe the press.  ====Then the press itself changed.  They had been considered a pubic service but suddenly they were looked at to create a profit.  Less emphasis on real investigative reporting (because that costs money) and more on personalities -- to attract more viewers -- more profit.  ===  Less detailed 'investigative' reporting so they started to rely on releases from the government (politicians) to fill in the air time.  These releases were self-serving --- and not always honest news.   ====  Example -- Bush2 thru Cheney released lis about Iraq to create a public push or war against Iraq with NO real proof that Hussain had anything to do with 9/11 (because there was no real connection -- they were NOT involved).  ====  Additionally the newer sources -- FOX, and the like are strictly cable news PROPAGANDA.  They support one particular party line and SLANT the 'news' to support their point of view.
