What type of shirt? Dress shirt? Tee shirt, fashion shirt, western shirt, sports shirt, Rugby shirt,  polo shirt, casual shirt, long sleeve, short sleeve, no sleeve, formal, informal, weekend, office, factory work,..... These so many shirts and shirt types it's impossible to answer. Each shirt needs different fabrics. A typical man's dress shirt is made in cotton. A basic tee is usually cotton. Softer vintage style tees are best in a blend of cotton and rayon for extra softness. Silk works well for high fashion. Workwear is best in polyester cotton blends. There's really no one single fabric that's universally "best" for all shirts.
