I'm sorry, but you made me laugh!  They're equally implausible but the 1938 version is much more entertaining even to this day.  You just have to enjoy it for what it is.  The BBC did make a much more faithful Robin Hood to the period it's supposed to be set in way back in the 70s called The Legend of Robin Hood.  My heart though will forever belong to Michael Praed's Robin Hood in Robin of Sherwood.
