Trash it in closest dumpster.40 years - almost 2 generations.

Try a local facebook group in the area and see if you get any responses

Sometimes, but if they haven't missed the stuff for 40yrs likely it isn't worth the effort or they don't miss it. 

Google Search - you may get lucky if you know where they might be living.
