You cannot enlist without specifying a gender.

After that as long as it conforms with regulations military personnel can do "whatever" with their hair.

They don't accept enlistment from someone that doesn't identify as either male of female.

What you may identify with does not really matter.  In the military, you are either male, or female, and those rules apply.

In the military, non-binary gender does not exist. The only genders are male and female, and the military WILL know which one you are.

In order to join the military you have to be either female or male, there are no exceptions.  Later on while in service if approved to change your sexual orientation then you can but again must be either male or female. Males must have short hair and females can have short or longer hair as long as it can be placed in a bun that meets regulations.

They do a physical at MEPS.

I can assure you.....if you are confused as to what gender you are......

they will check, at MEPS,  and let you know which one you are.

and you will be sent to the appropriate gender correct boot camp,  and you will adhere to that genders  hair regulations.........no matter what gender you believe yourself to be.

Wishing and thinking, and believing,   doesn't make it SO.

You ARE one or the other.  Physically speaking. And will be treated as such.

    Mrsjvb is right!

The application for enlistment (or induction) into the military has two blocks and only one of them can be marked. The dreaded M or F portion.

A person has to mark one or the other and then pass a physical to prove they did not misrepresent who they are based on physical anatomy.

It should be pointed out that complications from mumps in males has in the past been used to disqualify an applicant for enlistment and or a 4F classification for the draft. When mumps affected the reproductive organs and made them more or less dysfunctional the person was seen as no longer suitable for military service.

During their physical they determine whether the confused individual has a penis or a vagina and will order them to cut their hair to the requirements of those who possess similar genitals

The military does not recognize that orientation.  You are either male, or female and must adhere to the respective uniform regs.

    I would assume that

at least until reaching a certain rank

all personnel must follow the same regulations

    which is: short hair.
