Is it normal for someone to have worked at about 6 different companies by age 40?

I know someone who's 40 who's never stayed at a company longer than 3 years.

Let's say if they start working at age 20, it's not that unusual to have had 6 different jobs.  People don't work at the same company for 40 years anymore.

You better yourself in one of two ways.  You get promoted within your company or you use the experience you gain from working to move to better positions at other companies.   It would seem that as long as you are moving up and not laterally, changing jobs is a good thing.
