    In the USA, surnames are known as 'last names'.

    Gosh, if that is what you are asking, it just shows how far apart different versions of the English language have drifted.

    We can be amused in Britain by Americans driving on the 'pavement' (In Britain 'pavements' are what Americans call 'sidewalks'), but if something as fundamental as 'surname' can cause confusion we will soon have to think of dealing with two separate languages.

    A person's surname is their last name, usually the same as their parents' surname, in cultures where the family name goes last.

    So if your name is Anthony Leonard Panini, your surname would be Panini.
