Salve civium. Was the British Empire really a good thing? At one point it ruled over half the planet but did it do any lasting good?

    Hello to you, too.

It is fashionable to complain about the British Empire. However, it developed into a benevolent institution and ultimately became the Commonwealth.

Membership is voluntary and nearly all ex colonies have joined. It can't have been that bad.

the 54 nations cover 20% of the world's land area.

"Over half the planet", interesting how the further we get removed from the days of the British Empire the larger it gets... and it did more harm than good.

It never ruled over half the planet, but it has provided a legacy for those countries happy to build upon it. Others have pissed away any benefit fighting unnecessary wars, so it is something of a curate's egg.

Get you figures right.  The British Empire rule about a quarter of the planet by land area and by population.

In previous centuries the Spanish Empire was almost equally extensive, including part of North America - now part of the USA.

  • Yes dammit.  We taught the natives to play cricket and football so they could beat us.
