Is it okay for teachers to ask students their preferred pronouns?

It should be just fine. Especially if you give them opportunities to unobtrusively ask for exceptions to be made, say someone's trans and they're out at school but their parents don't know.

Source(s): I know what I'd want, plus I think about these things because one of my friends is the kind of person who could benefit from this, and I'm thinking I could benefit from this becoming common.

For me the use of 'they' and 'them' for a single known person is totally ridiculous. I understand the dislike by anyone who is unsure of gender identity for traditional 'he' or 'she', but that community will have to invent a new set of pronouns.
