What is the minimum amount of cube ice that is required to cool a 500 mL bottle of water from 32℃ to 0℃? The specific heat of the water in the bottle is 4.184 J/gC. The heat of fusion of ice is 0.334 kJ/g.

    Heat lost by bottle of water:

    q = m c (T2-T1)

    Assume that the density of water is 1.00 g/mL, then

    q = 500 g (4.184 J/gC) (0-32C) = -6.69X10^4 J = -66.9 kJ

    So, the ice melting must absorb 66.9 kJ

    q = mass (heat of fusion)

    66.9 kJ = mass (0.334 kJ/g)

    mass = 200 g ice
