If the extender is half way between the router and the garage, then yes. Putting the extender in the garage is the same as placing a laptop at the same place, same signal in that case. Wifi extenders can only repeat as good a signal as it gets in the first place. That is, garbage in, garbage out. Good in, good out.

That said, a wifi extender with a directional antenna (or outdoor antenna) plus a second antenna in the garage will improve a signal. It is all about how good a signal it can capture, and how good the signal becomes in the garage itself.

probably, yes.  measure the distance from the router and read the specs.  probably won't work if the garage is 1/4 mile away and partly underground [down slope]

Without any details it is difficult to say, if the computer is in the detached garage putting a range extender in a detached garage would server no benefit. The idea is that you put a range extender midway between the router and your equipment. If you have a weak or no signal in the detached garage then a range extender will have just the same problem as any other wifi equipment trying to detect the signal.

Your alternatives would use powerline/homeplug adapters - these use the household mains wiring instead of a long ethernet cable, you plug one adapter into the router and a nearby mains socket and the other adapter into the computer and a nearby mains socket.

Wi-Fi extenders are more effective for improving the connectivity in a detached garage than trying to move the router, buy a second router, update the hardware, or change the configuration. Extenders are also sometimes referred to as a repeater, booster, or relay.

It depends. How far away is the garage. What is it made of. Where is the other end of the range extender? In my experience, range extenders are mostly garbage.
