Which is correct?
While he was reading a book in his room, a tree fell on power lines in the neighborhood and he was left in (darkness / the darkness).

He was reading a book in his room when a tree fell on a nearby power line cutting off the electricity.
was left "in darkness" or "in the dark" are both acceptable in your wording.

Both are correct depending on the stress to be put on "darkness".If stress is essential, "the" too is necessary, if not, no need of "the" in the sentence.

It would be correct to say 'in darkness' or 'in the dark' but not 'in the darkness'.
