Can a security guard prevent you from crossing the street?

Witnessed a guy who was asked to leave a store, then proceeded to cross the street, where the security guard got all high and mighty claiming he couldn't cross the street. That the street was private property. While he was talking, all these other people crossed the street just fine, but this one guy the security guard got in his way and prevented him from crossing the street. This road was a major 4 lane road that went through the city with street lights, crosswalks and all. Not like some private road that goes up to someone's house.

Does he have the authority to do that?

Nope. Security guards have no authority over the roads. Wouldn't be the first security guard to have an inflated sense of self importance, though

I happen to be a security guard, I'm told not to go more than two metres out the door and if they escape any further than that you leave it, this is because it's not safe to go off the cameras. Security are not the police.

No.  security guards have no actual legal authority of any kind
