The soil profile and groundwater condition at a location is shown below. ?

a) Calculate the total horizontal stress σh at Points A, B and C assuming capillary rise is

developed to 1m above the original groundwater table.

Unit weight of water can be assumed to be 10 kN/m3.

b) If the water table rises to 1m above the ground surface, re-calculate the effective stress at

Points A, B and C and comment on the effect of the water table change on the soil strength.

The bulk unit weight at Point A can be assumed to be 19 kN/m3 when fully submerged.
