When you have a 'double negative' it changes to 'add'

So

8 - - 2 = 8 + 2 = 10

NB

Remember for 'double signs'.

+ + = +

- + = -

+ - = -

- - = +

If there is no sign in front of the number then read it as 'plus(+)'.

I would not accept that as a valid arithmetic expression at all. It has consecutive operators in the two minus signs. I am familiar with a whole series of secondary mathematics books in which that convention is adopted. Actually, they put the second minus sign in superscript, but you can imagine the resulting mess when school kids try to imitate it. That book series also used center dots for decimal points. Diabolical.

Here is what you must have intended to ask:

8 - (-2)

= 8 + 2

= 10

8-(-2)

You will need to distribute the negative. So - multiplied to another negative will give you postive (-)(-2)= 2

Then, 8+2=10

Think of it like this:

Your bank shows a credit balance of $8, after recording a debit entry of $2.

They discover that the debit was an error; so they reverse (remove; subtract) it.

What is the net balance? $10 --

8 - (-2) = 8 + 2 = 10

subtraction is the same as the addition of the opposite. So this changes to:

8 - (-2)

8 + 2

10
