Why was it common at one time for teenaged girls to marry men in their mid 20s?

Because no education was expected in most women, life expectancies were shorter, marriage was mostly for economic reasons and the sooner a family could relieve themselves of a daughter with her mouth to feed the better for the rest of the family.

It depends on the era and the cultural norm.  My grandmother was born in 1880, and she married when she was in her teens because of cultural expectations.

And to what "one time" are you referring too?

  • Men mature later than women - and when men had to provide money and women had to provide babies, it was advantageous for older men to marry younger women.
