Invited friend for a drink; response was “I wouldn’t want to deprive you of time with your friends and family”?

I emailed someone (who I thought was a long-time friend) for a drink.  We’re friends through church and shared an apartment about 20 years ago.

His response?  “How thoughtful of you; I wouldn’t want to deprive you of time with your friends and family, so I respectfully decline.  But thanks for the invitation!”

How insulting was his response?

He told you to F off in a polite way...when was the last time you talked to him? Sounds like you have not been a good friend to him.

He may want to decline you in the most polite way he can think of. But his response is so fake that one may feel insulted.
