Why do men in older movies (ie 40s-60s) have such close shaves? I tried the whole safety razor thing and the shaves weren’t as close as that.... its almost as if they’re hairless.

In the 40's and 50's they wrre probably using a straight razor.
Even in the 60's someone in the public eye (like an actor) would probably be shaved by a barber with a straight razor before appearing. A much closer shave than a safety razor. With safety razors many men would shave before work but if going out on the weekend would shave in the evening.
Where do you think the term "5 o'clock shadow" comes from?

if they shave in the morning it should not show through for a while. If they do get a 3 o'clock shadow I am sure it would be fixed up in make up.

If you had professional makeup specialists applying your makeup, your face would look equally smooth.
