Should I wait for the Apple Silicon Mac or should I just buy an intel Mac now?

I'm desperately in need of a new laptop, and I can't wait for much longer

If you need it now, jump on it. With an Intel powered Mac, everything works now and it will keep working long enough to get your money’s worth out of it.

The Apple powered Mac is going to have a lot of forward-looking features to keep up with iOS, and an emulator to let you run your Intel apps a few years longer, with the hope that the app makers keep up with the times. I doubt they’ll have the emulator forever, as I saw when they shifted from Motorola to IBM chips, then with IBM to Intel.

Intel equipment now, because you know it works.  Wait a year or two for bugs to work out of the new stuff, then maybe jump to it.

I bet you don't remember the early Pentium chip, which after a complicated math routine, gave a tiny error.  All of those were recalled, cost $475M.

And also if you don't remember, here is story about an early Apple:
