Why do I sneeze and cough if I drink ginger beer (or ale) through a straw, but not if I drink it straight from the can or bottle?

Update:

This does not happen with any other carbonated drinks, it's specifically the ginger ones.

Concentrated CO2 and ginger in the throat - no chance to disperse. Why have all my dogs sneezed several time after a small taste of beer? It is actually comically predictable.

wild guess is you are getting the ginger beer/ale further down into the throat, the spice of the ginger and the carbonation, and your nose (close to the soft palate) is reacting to the ginger.
