Hello I am a pharmacy student. Usually medical professionals use the score before medication to determine what type of medication to give as certain medications are for more severe pain while others are for mild to moderate pain. For example NSAIDS like ibuprofen and acetaminophen are for pain on the lower end of the scale while narcotics like oxycodone are for more severe pain. The score afterwards are to determine how effective the medication is as each person responds to medications differently and one may work differently between people.

Pain is difficult to measure as there aren't tools to measure it accurately as it is a very subjective symptom. This is why doctors can have a hard time determining when stronger medications are needed when they could be harmful if they aren't needed.

Before and after if you want to know best how to treat your pain. If you start off with a 6 but are only at, say a five after pain medication then that might tell you that you’d need a different med or higher dose.
