Did Elton John write any of his songs?

Or did he always have a lyricist like Bernie ?

Not very many. Song For Guy was one song entirely written by him.

He wrote the music for almost all of his songs - but only wrote the vocals for a few.

It was still up to him how to integrate the vocals that others wrote for him into his music, and how to sing them.

He did actually write the music for all his songs, even is he wasn't the lyricist.  Bernie Taupin did the lyrics but has said "I wrote them as poems basically, I didn't really have much idea about what music suited them. That was all Elton's work."

Elton John's solo efforts include Hard Luck Story (writing as Ann Orson/Carte Blanche), Funeral for a Friend (no lyric), Reverie (no lyric), Song for Guy (no sygnificant lyric), Carla/Etude (no lyric), and Dream #1/#2/#3 (no lyric).  It's fair to say that John writing alone produced just one and a fraction songs.
