Not ALL polyester suits are laughable. A suit made of polyester fabric in a modern style of cut and fit and in a basic color such as black, grey or dark blue can be a budget friendly way to have something to wear to special occasions when one isn't swimming in money. Some modern polyester fabrics can look as good as real wool or linen or wool blends.  When people think of "polyester suit" they are usually picturing an old 1970's suit in strange colors with super wide lapels, flapped cargo style pockets, wide legged cuffed pants -the so called Leisure Suit. Like the one Cousin Eddie wore in the movie Christmas Vacation. That polyester was shiny, coarsely woven and had a weird plastic look and feel.

Snobbery. Polyester suits are for people who are too poor to afford linen or wool

Watch the old repeats of the Lawrence Welk Show on PBS to see why.    Polyester was the "miracle" fabric of the 60s/70s - - depending on the weave, it tended to "pill", snag and didn't breath like natural fabrics.  It fell from favor - partially a victim of the colors, wide lapels, white belts and flare trousers that were also popular at the same time.
