Why do cats instinctively use litter boxes, while dogs have to be taught to use the outdoors?

In the wild, cats bury their feces when in the presence of a larger, superior predator. Take it as a compliment.

Because dogs are stupid, dirty, and lick their butts and want to lick your face.

Cats do not instinctively use litter boxes, as kittens they need to be showed, which is training

Probably cats are ingrained to dig and bury their waste (all cats - wild and domestic), so its easier to housebreak.  Dogs on the other hand are used to not sticking to one spot or area and tend to just stop and go when they need to go.  So its a process to teach the dog to go outside in an area you want them to go.  Watch a dog in a yard - they will never go in the same spot twice.

In the wild cats bury their own poop to hide the odor from potential predators. They do the same in captivity because it is instinctive. Dogs evolved from wolves, and wolves live in packs, so they are capable of defending themselves even against big predators like bears. There is therefore no need to hide their poop. Wolves hunt by jogging after prey to tire them out. That is why dogs like to go jogging.

Cats bury their poop to conceal it from potential predators.

Dogs use urine and feces to mark territory and communicate- however their instinct is to do it outside of the den

It's an instinct, where they want to bury it "in the wild" to conceal their presence. It's also what they're taught by mother while they're learning to be a cat.  They see her doing it and realise that's what they're supposed to do.

Cats instinctively want to bury their feces .. so they like to find somewhere to 'dig' and, if they are inside, a litter tray is (usually) the best place to do that

Cat %&^# smells worse than dog %&^# so cats instinctively bury it.
