Why did my dentist put a bite block in my mouth or mouth prop to hold it open for a filling ?

It takes some time to do a filling and your jaw muscles can get tired of keeping your mouth open that long. The bite block keeps your mouth open with less effort.

Because you weren't able to open wide enough,  long enough.
