     A math class has a total of 20 students.

     When the 2 new male students enter,

     the number of female students exceeds

     the number of male students by 2 students.

     Find the number of female students in that class.

     f + m = 20

     f + (m + 2) = 22

     f - m = 2

     Solution:

     f = 11, m = 9

     The number of female students in that class is 11.

    When the two new student arrive we have,

    m + f = 22...(1)

    f = m + 2...(2)

    so, m + (m + 2) = 22

    => 2m = 20

    i.e. m = 10 => f = 12

    Hence, 10 male and 12 female students

    Note, before the two extra males were added we had 8 male and 12 females => 20 students
