Why couldn't the Capitals just pay Barry Trotz?
Todd Rierden is not the answer! They need a coaching change now!

They could've and should've. I knew they'd go way down hill without him. They are not even serious contenders the last couple of years. People greatly underestimate the difference a coach makes at the pro level, including the Capitals owner obviously.

That's a great question to ask their owner, who happens to be a billionaire. Rierden is gone; no idea what they will do (Gallant or Laviolette are the rumoured names but who knows at this point).

Wasn't Trotz almost fired himself the year before they won the cup and if they hadn't he would have been gone?
4 million a year is a lot of cash.

Trotz wanted a five year contract, and management were unwilling to commit to him for that long. They were willing to pay him what he wanted, but unwilling to commit to him for five years, given the relative short shelf life of head coaches in the modern era.
