It has nothing to do with wood. As with some English words, there is another meaning. The origin in this case is Greek which means word. Log in English has been turned to also mean record, listing, account, register, or journal. The use is older than computers.
The act of logging in has been extended to the use of computers which is often required to acquire access to it. This is likened to a security guard asking for your identification card and signature on a logbook before you are allowed to enter a building.

It’s a metaphor. Imagine you are checking into a hotel. The desk clerk asks you to sign your name in a book, which is called a log, and adds your room number. You are logging into the hotel.
