    Did you actually ask the question HOW TO SPELL ATHEIST? Don't you have a dictionary?

    Theo = god

    ism = system/belief system

    a as a prefix = equivalent to the Latin "non-" meaning "not"

    Drop the "o" and putting theo and ism together to make theism, which is the systemic belief in gods.

    Adding the "a" to make atheism means non-belief in gods.

    The word is of Greek, not English, Latin, or Germanic in origin so the I before E rule does not apply.
