What is the best state for homesteading?

The question says it all.

    Homesteading is now illegal in the USA.

    Assuming you mean "which US state would be best for homesteading", I'd recommend either Tennessee or North Carolina. Both have vast areas of unspoiled wilderness and the climate isn't too severe. There's plenty of game, the growing season is longer than it is in more northerly locations, there's adequate rainfall, and land is cheaper than it is in many other places. I'd definitely recommend western North Carolina or eastern Tennessee.
