If they had not passed the 17th Amendment, how likely is it that we would have 26+ trillion dollar debt?

Remember before the `7th Amendment, the state legislatures chose their senators which meant that those senators had to explain their actions to the state legislature and if the state legislature didn't like what they heard those senators were likely not going back to Washington.  So the figures they were getting from their senators about the New Deal, The Great Society, Obamacare, etc didn't add up those senators had some explaining to do.  As it stands today those receiving those benefits don't care what cost and those paying for them are stuck with costs whether they like it or not.
