In simple layman's terms, what exactly is this new theory about Schrödinger's cat about?

I tried to read many news articles about it, but I still do not understand it.

What exactly are they trying to say? Thanks in advance.

The cat was a thought "experiment" about what happens inside some closed container where we cannot KNOW what is happening.  We can only know what happened after we observed it.  There were four hypothetical explanations.  At the moment ONE of those four is viewed with favour.  This one is that the cat in the box is BOTH alive and dead at the same time and that only one of these two becomes fixed at the moment that we make the observation ( open the box).

It is not a theory because we cannot gain the experimental evidence and it does not make a prediction.
