    Depends on your definition of "near future".

    The chances an asteroid of sufficient mass will hit the Earth and trigger a tsunami that could affect major coastal cities are hard to estimate.

    They are a once-in-hundred-million-year event.

    Major destruction and extinction events are caused by human activity, greed, delusion and stupidity. Hence human initiated destruction on a biblical scale can be expected at least once this century. So you won't have long to wait.
