Let x be the number of people on the train.
x - 19 + 17 = 63
x = 65
There were 65 people on the train.

At start, x were on the train. Then 19 got of leaving x-19 on the train. Then 17
got on, leaving x-2 = 63 on the train. So x = 65.

If 19 people got off but then 17 people got on, that's the same as if only 2 people got off.
Add back the 2 people and you have 65 that were on the train to begin with.
