Galileo Galilei. The man was brilliant, but his beliefs did not jive with the pope of that time, and the Vatican and its teachings. How dare he say that the Earth revolved around the Sun, and that there was no Heaven above the clouds. He died essentially a prisoner under house arrest by the Vatican. Pope John Paul's first papal apology in 1992 was for the church's treatment of Galileo--359 years late.
