did the U.S. war in Vietnam allow for U.S. and China relations to grow or change for business relations?

i remember seeing pictures of Nixon in China and Henry Kissinger going over to work out deals with Vietnamese and other S.E. asian leaders. what was going on there really? maybe some type of "opening up" China more similar to how the British did with the Opium wars?
