Has anyone witnessed intelligence in an insect before?

I don't mean ants as they are only following a program. I actually witnessed a Devils coachman beetle that showed a need for revenge after I flicked it way across the road with a lollypop stick a couple of times. It ran a long distance to get back to the stick, about 18' to give it a good wrangling and it did this twice. The third time, I let it have the stick and it bit it repeatedly with its mandibles. Insects are normally programmed to run away from an attacker, not toward it. This bug wanted vengeance. I was only around nine at the time and bugs were often my toys but I knew this one behaved differently. There was someone in there. This bug was not running on a set program.
