What is a good way to act around cliquey people, if you have to be around them, say at work, with friends of friends or even family?

Who do not really talk to you.. rather they chat to themselves and talk around you, like you do not exist.

Despite you being polite and nice.

 

This can happen in any group or life situation

Example my mother and sister chat around me..though i see them only twice a year due to distance

Again.. they may be family

Colleagues or friends or partners of friends

Ignoring is not always an option..

Just say "hello" then get on with your own work.

Choose to put your focus elsewhere, given you cannot control or change other people.  Seek out people you connect with and engage in conversation with them.  There is no obligation to remain with people who are choosing to not interact with you.

Why can't you just ignore them? Choosing to communicate with them is your problem and yours alone.

Interrupting will make you look petty and jealous. 

I would go on my phone or make my own fun.
