This all depends on your budget, really.

If you are keeping your cabinets, perhaps painting them and updating the hardware is the way to go (99centknobs,com). Or just change all of the cabinet doors. Maybe consider glass doors for the dish or glassware cabinet.

Is there a wall that is bare? If so, maybe shallow floor to ceiling cabinets for pantry or kitchen ware storage may work for you.

    Update your faucet.

    Install a new backsplash.

    Paint the room.

Replace the floor. If it is a wood floor,  refinish it.

If space prevails, get either an island on locking wheels or a stationary one, possibly with counter top stools.

    Get new curtains.

    Replace appliances.

    Build a corner pantry.

Can you create a window seat or other built in seating?

Maybe just replace the upper cabinets so they reach the ceiling.

Install under Cabinet lighting on the wall cabinets.

Install recessed lighting on the ceiling.

    Change light fixtures.

Go to and use the keywords "kitchen upgrades" for a ton of ideas.

Sit down and crack open a cold one and have some designer books and a pencil and paper and draw.

Here are some ways to update your kitchen

    Paint or Replace Cabinetry

If you want huge results fast, then our first tip is to update the kitchen cabinetry.  We find that one of the easiest things to do is to paint the cabinetry!  There are some amazing new paints on the market now that are specifically designed for the kitchen area.

    Create a New Benchtop

So if you are going to the trouble of replacing or painting your cabinetry, it makes sense to replace the kitchen benchtop as well.  Again, updating this will have a huge impact on the overall look, and can be done at the same time as the cabinetry update.

    Upgrade Sink & Tapware

Finally, let’s think about your cabinetry pulls or handles.  Even though they are a seemingly tiny part of your kitchen design, you’ll be surprised at how much impact they actually have.
