There are conflicting theories. 10, 11 or 3. Those who support string and manifold theories go with the higher numbers. Those who prefer various 'quantum gravity' theories go with the lower.

A dimension is something you can move through. Obviously, we can move through length, width, depth, and forward in time. There's nothing above those four that we could conceive of moving through.
There is the possibility of parallel universes, but they would exist in the same space as our own, and have the same four dimensions.

We know of three for sure. But M-Theory says there could be 11 and Bionic string theory says there could be 26 dimensions.

For us humans, we are only able to discern 4 dimensions.
Unlike a 5-dimensional being like Griffin the Arkanan.
