Did nhl playoffs always start this early in the day. Live in Vancouver and games started at 930am?

Not to this extent-
It's being done because there are 24 teams in the qualifying round/playoffs, only 2 arenas and 2 months to complete the entire playoffs. The NHL has to fit in as many games as possible, there's going to be 3 games a day, some may even be back-to-backs.
In a regular year, there's occasional games that are played at 12:30, mostly on NBC, and usually on weekends.

Yes- Eastern conference playoff games have started at 12:30 p.m. ET (9:30 a.m. PT); our southern neighbours at NBC have given us these noon starts usually when trying fit a game around their horse racing coverage (make your own joke).

It's mainly because they're using hub cities this year. In normal year they can have multiple games played at the same time since they're all over the place, but this time it's only 2 rinks in use so they have to start earlier to fit all the games in.
There were always some early games -- NBC seems to like showing Sunday afternoon games -- but it wasn't every day like it is right now.
